18K GOLD GILDING
Our silver jewelry is gilded with 18-carat gold using an electrolysis process. This is a jewelry technique that allows for a consistent and durable gilding. The jewelry is immersed in a bath of gold ions, then passed through with an electric current that delicately fixes the gold to its surface. At Boussolaria, we have chosen a 1-micron gilding to guarantee shine and optimal wear on a daily basis.
RHODIUM
To enhance our silver jewelry, we apply rhodium plating , a rare and precious metal prized in fine jewelry for its intense silver shine . Produced by electrolysis , this process fixes a thin layer of rhodium to the surface of the jewelry. Invisible but protective , it prevents oxidation, limits scratches and intensifies shine, for a lasting shine every day.
WHAT IS A MICRON?
A micron is an extremely fine unit of measurement : 1 micron = 0.001 millimeter. It's a thickness that's almost invisible to the naked eye, but it makes all the difference in jewelry.
What many people don't know is that many costume jewelry pieces are covered with a simple veil of gold. The gilding is so fine—often 0.05 microns or less—that it wears off within weeks. Water, friction, and nothing remains. The jewelry loses its gilding, its shine, and its charm.
At Boussolaria, we have made another choice: 18-carat gold plating , 1 micron thick . This is 20 to 30 times thicker than many jewels. Placed on a 925 silver base, this micron makes all the difference and ensures each jewel has a much longer-lasting hold.
